This poem deals with a camp fire that went awry causing the Arizona wildfire of May 8, 2011. It describes the measures being taken to bring it under control. The fire continues to threaten communities as it fans out through the Apache and Sitgreaves National Forests.
Eastern Arizona wildfire began on May 8th in a ponderosa pine forest
Apparently started by a camp fire gone awry
It has spread to over 400,000 acres
Mercilessly spouting black ash and flames high in the sky
For all to view its consuming power
Over 25 hundred fire fighters with fire engines
Helicopters, water tenders and bulldozers
Descended on Arizona to face down this blaze
And to protect nearby communities in danger of being consumed
The fire is roaring and fanned by high winds
Thousands in Eagar have evacuated and those in Springerville
Are on alert to do the same if conditions do not improve
The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecasted
Conditions of high wind and low humidity
Are conducive for weather that will lead
To a prolongation of this type of wildfire
The fire continues to rush through
The Apache and Sitgreaves National Forests

Moving rapidly all the way to New Mexico’s State line
And threatening power transmission lines as far as east Texas
