A short poem about my "ho hum" working day…

The elevator numbers ding up to six. Step out, swipe my access card, shuffle to my desk. “Morning Andy, how was your weekend?” Boot up my computer. Forgot my password. Red tie guy in opposite office always arrives same time as me. Wonder why? A phone’s ringing. Brring, brring. “Good morning, CorporateIT, Adam speaking.”

I scan my email, 27 joke ones, 1 work one. Time for a coffee? One half eaten orange and poppyseed muffin later it’s meeting time. Meeting at 9. Meeting at 10. Meeting at 11. Just when I think I can’t take another meeting my boss says, “Time for a quick meeting?” Brring, brring. “Good morning, CorporateIT, Adam speaking.”

Reheated Chinese wafts on the aircon breeze. Meerkat Matt pops up. “Pub for lunch today?” Flinders Bar and Bistro’s Tasty Teriyaki T-Bone. One beer, one coke, one minute after I get back to my desk the phone rings. Brring, brring. “Good afternoon, CorporateIT, Adam speaking.”

While squeezing a stress ball I hear the call, “Time for a meeting this afternoon?” “Sorry, full schedule,” I lie. Beer at lunch, drowsy in the afternoon. Antibacterial hand wipes stop me getting swine flu. Stationary cupboard replenishes, may as well get a couple of pens and some Blu-Tack. Brring, brring. “Good afternoon, CorporateIT, Adam speaking.”

Time for another coffee? Photocopier’s jammed. Is that tapping on keyboards? Hum of printer drum. It’s so quiet it’s loud. Roll my radio on. “Adam, can you turn that down?” “Sure, no problem.” Post it notes remind me to get a life. Last hour feels like seven. Fill out my time sheet. “Seeya tomorrow Andy.” Brring, brring. Brring, brring. Brring, brring. “Will somebody pick up that damn phone?” Too late, I’m already walking. Swipe my card. Elevator opens.

Another day another dollar. I really should ask for a pay rise.
