Final – Painting Review

Throughout the semester, I have learned quite a bit about art; from its history, to its function, to its creators. Coming into this course, I had a limited knowledge of artistic works of art and did not understand what the main purpose of art was. However, as this course has progressed, I have learned much more about art, and have also begun to appreciate it more extensively. Recently, I took a trip to the Philbrook Museum in search of a meaningful and interesting piece of art. The painting that I found is absolutely beautiful and meaningful, and it further solidifies my new-found appreciation for art.

Theseus Discovers His Father’s Weapons is a beautiful oil on canvas painting crafted by Nicolas Poussin and Jean Lamaire in the 17th century. The colors in the painting are primarily cool colors, giving an eerie yet realistic sense to the painting. The painting is very earthy, displaying the tones of the earth, sky, and trees. Theseus, the main focus of the painting, is nearly centered; he is bending over lifting a large stone, which apparently houses the weapons of his father. Surrounding him is a small “building”, which is mainly a stone frame encasing the characters. A symbol of the times as well as the Roman culture, there are very large iconic pillars on the building itself. The trees are situated behind the building, remaining a subtle accent to the piece. Though there is not much color to the majority of the painting, Theseus is clothed in a pink toga, and the woman in front of him stands tall in a light blue gown. It is evident that the people are the main focus of the painting, but everything is tied together in such a manner that I do not think the painting could be complete without every aspect.

The original painting was purchased by the Grand Duke Ferdinando III of Lorraine. The painting was one of a series of copies of identical subjects. The painting came about from collaboration between Poussin and Lemaire. This painting is primarily attributed to Poussin and is considered to be one of the best copies. The painting is claimed to be the prime exponent of 17th century classicism. The plot of the story revolves around a young man named Theseus, who is guided by his mother Aethra, to uncover his father’s weapons, and learn of his illustrious birth by King Aegeus, a king of Athens. The painting itself was composed in 1665, and it is a very beautiful and meaningful piece of work.
