Art Review.

I believe the artist’s intent in this painting is to portray greatness and power through the history of the region from which he comes. The painting communicates a sense of greatness, as well as a sense of great honor of one’s cultural and genetic heritage. When I see this painting, I think of the mother as guiding her son into his legacy, following in his father’s footsteps and becoming a great defender of his nation. I believe it is fully the artist’s intent to uncover a sense of pride and understanding from the viewer. It also seems as if the artist is trying to evoke a sense of grandiosity from the viewer as well. The work reflects the culture from which it comes to a tee, from the buildings, to the clothing, to the theme of the painting itself.

The colors, the textures, the buildings, the clothing, and the individuals featured in the painting all help tie the story of the piece together. It seems as if the artist is mainly trying to focus on the people in the picture, and the actions of the people themselves. The way that the piece is painted does just that: draws attention to the individuals and theme of the picture. Theseus, I believe, is a metaphor in a greater analogy: the analogy of life, pride, and honor. The elements in the painting are all beautiful and grand, representing perhaps the destiny that Theseus is to fulfill in his lifetime. It seems that the form of every part of this painting fits its function extremely well.

This painting speaks to me in a unique way, which is why I chose it. I think that we all have the responsibility to take up arms and fight for what we believe in, both literally and metaphorically. I believe that there is more to the painting than is visually present. I see a typical man taking up his arms and laying down his past to become something great. When I was looking at the piece, I had a sense of comfort as well as a sense of burden overcome me. I know that there are things in life that I should be standing up and fighting for, and things that I should be fighting against. Sometimes, the easier thing to do is to ignore these things and go about life in a mundane manner, but often we could be making something great out of ourselves. I think that this painting was exquisite and really spoke to my beliefs and thoughts about life and everyday situations. I think that Poussin did a fantastic job with this painting, and I am certainly glad to have found it.
