Sometimes something given in love last longer then the relationship itself. The shirt symbolizes just that and can tell a story all its own.The shirt still exist though the romance is long gone.

It was just an old faded thermal shirt,

one may wonder why I still keep it.

But if you knew the old shirts history,

you would know why I have kept it.

****

The shirt used to be a dark maroon,

but now has faded from much wear.

It has lost a battle with bleach also,

but to me the shirt remains the same.

****

My lover that is long gone gave it to me,

to keep me warm on a cold winter night.

It did the job when he wasn’t around,

but in  no way replaced his body heat.

****

The shirt got me through very rough times,

I slept with it on when I missed my lover.

I could at one time smell his cologne to,

the shirt made me homesick for his love.

****

I still wear it to keep warm in the winter,

under a hoody it does as it supposed to.

His scent has been long gone for awhile,

replaced by my favorite Rare Gold perfume.

****

But my lover that I loved is long gone now,

but the memories of our time still remains.

The thermal shirt lasted longer then he did,

a situation that is regretted deep in my heart.

****

Some day the thermal shirt wont be wearable,

worn out from my wearing the shirt many times.

Then it will be turned into dust rages to dust with,

But the memory of it or the man will forever remain.

Awww A Lady Poet, what a meaningful poem you have composed here as a cherished treasure that can last a lifetime. Yes in deed the people we meet and get to know and sometimes love become a part of us forever. We usually hang onto items given to us by them as a cherished treasure to reflect upon the great memories. Thank You for sharing your wonderful gift of writing with us all and I commend you for a poem well done…

The beauty of life is in the items that carry no monetary value. Your poem captures that beauty. I hope your heart has healed. nice work.
