Written for my wife on own 35th anniversary, September 1, 2008. It reflects that when we got married we not only made promises to each other, but also to God. Marriage is a sacred act which should not be taken lightly.

Three people committed
To a sacred vow that day,
When we promised
To honor and obey.

Three people vowed
Whatever came they’d stay.
Two people often failed
In thought, in word, in deed.

They continued to fail
To see each other’s need.
Two people often struggle
To maintain unity.

The One has never failed
To keep His promise made.
One has never failed
To meet our every need
He strengthens and supports us
And hears our every plea.

Three people committed
To a sacred vow that day
When we promised
To honor and obey.
Two have often failed
But the Other’s always true.

As we make a fresh commitment
To that promise long ago,
Let’s not forget the One
Who’s kept us through the years.
The two of us may fail
But thank you for Thy Son.

For better or worse, for richer or poorer,
In sickness or in health, ‘til death do us part.
