When love cannot be.

thy cool and distant waters
submerge to deepest core
this heart engulfed in memories
of moments once before
of happiness and wonder,
of awe and of delight,
of smiles and whispers in the day,
of glances in the night.
yet how can love endure to take
such torment and such peace,
when by creation likened to
earth and sky, land and breeze.
to stay with thee, such joy
and yet such torment will it be,
for how can one on earth
dwell in the waters of the sea,
where air hath no existence
but life endureth so
for thou alone are fuel
to this subtle candle glow.
so far it goes and so it goes
that glum this heart may be,
shall try endure a lifetime
pulling back to keep from thee
the love for thine alone
that when not spoken by a kiss
shall keep consuming spirit here
till last breath shall be bliss.
