A poetic portrayal of the life and works of William Carey, the father of modern missions.

A counterfeit coin passed for real discovered the sinner Carey
Salvation claimed his heart with zeal to write the famed “Enquiry”
William Carey had a vision to bring the world to Jesus
All the lost forsaken heathen his only need for reason

Scraps of leather, a handmade globe, a shoemaker with the Word
A consecrated cobbler endowed to do the bidding of the Lord
“Go ye therefore, into all the world, baptizing in My name”
With the call of Jesus in his heart to India Carey came

His family dissenting drawn along, not knowing their beckoning fate
Hunger, sickness, doubt, and fear for blessings they must wait
With the languages learned, Carey preached with hardly a ray of hope
The chains of the casts he beseeched as in darkness, still, they groped

Marshman, like a hawk eying his prey fervently pressed God’s appeal
Yet, assaulted in every conceivable way he continually witnessed with zeal
In Bengali, Ward printed plain the Bible for Hindu hands
Prompted by Carey’s stirring words, this trio watered those desert lands

Finally from the river a Hindu waded, Baptized and consecrated
The  Lord’s supper celebrated, the “holy” Ganges desecrated
The first of many, Krishna came, and answered the plea of Dr. Thomas
He would plant, Carey watered, as all received the promise

Like Peter, James, and John were they, Carey, Marshman, and Ward
This trio of Serampore that faithfully served the Lord
Together they built a mission school to propagate God’s holy message
To sinners needing a Savior, it was truly “a city of refuge”

A soul to God is of infinite worth: Now for Jesus, we must go with mirth
To call all nations to Christ’s new birth, as Carey, to the ends of the earth!
At William Carey College we strive for the knowledge and wisdom  gleaned
And to Carey’s great challenge we must rise “to expect and attempt great things”
