A love poem about the unspoken promises you make to your significant other the day after a fight.

So I’ll say, “Hello to you!”

And then you’ll smile.

It’ll be the beginning of another day

Another chance

Just one more marking on our internal calendars.

We’ll pretend last night didn’t happen.

I’ll have kept my words to myself.

You won’t have cried

Or begged

Or breathed in that way that you do when things get too silent.

Miraculously

We’ll awake refreshed.

Silently

We’ll agree to try harder

To never again have another night like the one last night that didn’t happen

To speak our thoughts even when they seem unspeakable

To love each other with every ounce of our souls

To live more fully so that tomorrow is the reality of a long-held fantasy.

Let’s shake on it, yes?

I’ll even settle for a kiss.
