I have just come back from spending another very hot holiday in Italy where my brother and I had to fight for some shade on the beach.

Why do they have umbrellas on the beach

When so very little shade they provide?

They flutter gently in the breeze

But from the sun it’s impossible to hide.

You sit in the shadow that is thrown

In the hope of finding a cool spot to read,

But although your head may be in the shade

Your feet to the baking sun are freed.

How does one deal with this dilemma

When an umbrella is made to shelter two?

How can you feel comfortable enough

To do what you really want to do?

We tried so many remedies

But none really addressed the demand.

Maybe umbrellas could be all joined together

Then we can enjoy a relaxing time on the sand.

Quite poignant! I have always wondered myself, why man is so keen to have a shade over his head when the feet is in the sun.

I don’t think they allow umbrellas on the actual beach here. I never see them. If you want shade you go to the park. The sand is for the tanners and swimmers going back and for to the water, and I never liked walking on it barefoot. It gets too hot and tongs and such get full of sand that is uncomfortable too.

  • jimbob1 on Jul 18, 2010

CR…sounds like it was a hot time on the Italian beaches…could almost feel the heat as you lead us into a bit of shade from the scourching sun…sounds like you need to get umbrella owners to get used to some closer fellowship…I liked this one and welcome back…

  • fishfry aka Elizabeth Figueroa on Jul 18, 2010

Totally awesome, it apppears umbrellas are no long enough to protect us from the sun. Your words are chosen wisely, and roll along smoothly.

    Lovely poem, Christine.

The weather has been erratic here in my part of the world. It’s been pouring and causing flash floods here so a little more sunshine would be much welcome!

That has never made sense to me neither but I dont sit on beaches anymore.A sun worshiper I am not and dont want to be.You would need a very large umbrella but do they make them that big?A write that makes one think and well liked.
