We all need to keep our wills up to date.

Updating Our Wills

Writing a will is a laborious task.

We have been sitting here for hours.

We cannot agree on the correct wording

Or who should have executive powers.

We last made our wills ten years ago

And things have drastically changed.

We’ve all got new homes or moved abroad

So the wills must be rearranged.

There is so much we have to think about

And we need to do this just right,

If our family is going to be left happy

With their futures secure and bright.

So we’ll plod away at the details

With all the online help we can find,

And we’ll soon have wills we’ll be proud of

All dutifully witnessed and signed.

Christine

I love how you wrote it in poetry! For homeowners, you should write about Living Trust :)

It is very important to review your will every couple of years or so.

  • Mary Patricia Bird on Dec 3, 2009

We’ve done our wills but not Power of Attorney, which is probably more important. Hopefully we’ll get to it soon.

  • Guy Hogan on Dec 3, 2009

I have nothing to leave but debt so I don’t need a will.

  • Ramalingam on Dec 3, 2009

I fully agree with you.In India if you want to make any change or update your original will, you have to write a codicil, that will update and form part and parcel of the original will. For example if you add any additional property to the list, that detail alone will find a place in the codicil.Your poem shows that you must have experienced a lot while executing your will. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Christine! I know it’s been a long time since I’ve been on Triond but tonight I just wanted to publish a short article and then see what you were up to! :) I have missed Triond and writing, in general, so much…but school comes first right now.

I loved the poem…and the way you incorporate life situations into poetry is a gift that so many of us don’t have. (I’m at the top of that list! Lol).

Just the fact that you chose such a difficult subject as Wills only proves even more how talented you are! :) :)

  • CA Johnson on Dec 6, 2009

This is very informative and creatively done. I don’t have a will, but I should consider writing one. You never know what could happen.

  • AlmaG on Dec 6, 2009

I will come back again -_^ … loving this poem :)

  • Tina Cassello on Dec 7, 2009

I’m with Guy Hogan, I have more debt than assets but I can’t decide who to make beneficiary to my life insurance policy either if I don’t die before the policy expires because I have stopped paying premiums. I have no heirs and I don’t really care much about what is done with my body or who gets whatever money they can, if they can collect anything.

  • Francois Hagnere on Dec 8, 2009

I loved the way you said it. A will is not an easy thing, and updating means a lot. An excellent write, Christine, on a difficult subject.

  • XXElleXX on Jan 17, 2010

Too right Christine…it’s bad enough when you lose a loved one…but when families are torn apart over an invalid will…heart-breaking and a damn headache!
