Vanity and pride can blind us from the important things in life.

Everywhere I look in society,

I see people full of vanity and pride

success is measured by wealth

and idolatry

everyone is caught up in the love

of money and worshiping idols

children dream of becoming famous

in sports, music or acting careers

getting rich overnight and living “large”

every other week there are award shows

splashed on television

to honor those who make millions

having fun and playing games

fans flock to see these vain

and conceited Gods

masses stand in lines for hours

to get a glimpse

paying prices they can’t afford

to be a part of the crowd

shoes have become an obsession

and designer clothes is sought after

like an addiction

education promises the American Dream

with everyone believing

they can reach that goal

vanity can ruin a life, or lead to crime

teens have always passed through

a stage of vanity for a short while

now this stage begins young

and is an on going desire

everyone wants to be financially secure

as they should be

but wanting to buy material goods

to keep up with the Jones

has led to selfishness becoming

a way of life

sharing is a thing of the past

except in times of Natural Disasters

the wealthy hoard what they have

and dreams of the poor shatter

children are left alone

so parents can work

money is the God of survival

and people live in the streets

children go to bed hungry

in a land of Plenty

prisons are built to hide the

shame of a greedy society

churches do the best they can

to help the poor while the government

cuts programs causing more poverty

billions are spent on war and

outer space exploration

scientists invent ways to

upgrade technology

computers fill the homes of those

who can afford them

those who don’t have one

are ignored by progress

commercials cry out

buy, buy, buy

everyone is in competition for profit

field workers are the backbone

of the nation

yet, they receive slave wages

to keep the masses fed

they get no credit for their

sacrifices and hardships

they toil in sweat and tears

and still get nowhere

health care is taken for granted

by the rich

the poor get sick, lose every thing

and no one cares

news medias cater to the politics

of the well to do

glorifying people who live in luxury

at the expense of the rest

middle class workers strive to get ahead

by working long hours so they can live

comfortably

giving their children all the material things

they don’t need

vanity and pride are sins

and Charity is the path to heaven

society has not been able to see

the confusion

the wealthy believe they deserve

their financial blessings

forgetting that they must pass

through the eye of a needle

and charity is the way to life ever lasting
