A reflection on a beautiful amphora, given as a gift. The vase signifies the body of a person whose real value lies in the love and wisdom that it bears.

In beauty and grace you had been formed

Intricately designed and comely adorned

From lump of clay you’ve been transformed

Through the skillful hands of a master molder

From earth, to a wonderful art itself.

A vase you are, of exquisite quality,

Trimmed with flowers and cheerful cherubs

The heralds of peace and happiness

Shining in shades of colorful hues

Signs of blessings to one who owns you

But beyond your sheen and rare beauty

You stand at a corner, immobile and lifeless

Without anyone giving you his gaze,

You are nothing but an ordinary piece

Lonely and insignificant for all your days

Thus t’is not in the greatness of your looks

That your value and significance are measured

Neither that your appearance is of importance

For it is not how you appear that counts

Rather on the pricelessness of what you contain

Beauty alone compensates for nothing

Foe whence time takes its course, it withers

No amount of exuberance or luster

Can give justice to an empty vessel

Value lies not on the vase, but on its content

No human being then can claim greatness

Merely through vanity and extravagant living

For not in bodily or in material wealth

Can a person measure his worth on earth

Rather on the love and wisdom that he possesses.
