This is a modern poem opposite to Stephen Crane 1899 poem “war is kind”. This poem is telling it like it is.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight thousand etc… been hurt
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight thousand etc…have died
We need the medics and a bunch of body bags grab grass and shirts
We need to use what we have some I can’t tell if dead or alive
Captain, I can’t hear you because the smoke and sound from artillery
Sergeants, hold your position our men’s are falling apart in pieces
The different weaponry sound just keep getting louder, God help me
I smell the mixtures of ammo and flesh…I must find nephew and nieces
Captain, we need to retreat if we stay here we are sure to be dead meat
Sergeant, our aircrew just dropped a big one and it’s clearing our way
They are on the run and look like we have won with our intense heat
Now that the war is over our country must stabilize and decide who stay
Many soldiers died in an unkind way that affected many people lives
Many soldiers return with missing limbs, defect, and memory loss
Some of them were never the same as indicated by family and wives
Congress Research Services concludes a 436 billion dollar war cost
War is unkind for the graphic photograph and stories that are told
The soldiers endured intense heat and fought to the body grew cold
Our soldiers completed the mission but hope our economy don’t fold
Always keep our brave soldiers in your mind for war is very unkind
