Grandma used to make all us kids–me and my cousins–eat watermelon outside. She said it was just too messy in the house.

Watermelon–
King of fruits
Growing round in summer heat
Carrying gallons
of water to you
To make the treat
I love to eat.
Watermelon,
Striped in green
Prettiest sight
Ever Seen.
Slice it open
Hear that crunch
As the big knife
Reveals our lunch.

It might be pink,
or deeper red
Or it could be
Yellow instead.

Little black seeds
To spit at
Your cousin or brother.

Gra’ma says
“Don’t swallow the seeds
Or in your tum
You’ll grow a
Watermelon vine.”
Growing out my ears
Now wouldn’t that be fine?
I could have
Yummy watermelon
Just about any time!
