Grandma used to make all us kids–me and my cousins–eat watermelon outside. She said it was just too messy in the house.

Watermelon–
King of fruits
Growing round in summer heat
Carrying gallons
of water to you
To make the treat
I love to eat.

Watermelon,
Striped in green
Prettiest sight
Ever Seen.
Slice it open
Hear that crunch
As the big knife
Reveals our lunch.

It might be pink,
 or deeper red
Or it could be
Yellow instead.

Little black seeds

To spit at

Your cousin or brother.

Gra’ma says
“Don’t swallow the seeds
Or in your tum
You’ll grow a
Watermelon vine.”
Growing out my ears
Now wouldn’t that be fine?
I could have
Yummy watermelon
Just about any time!

Daisy, that was so much fun. I eat watermelon now in place of getting a drink of water. Hydrate and get fiber at the same time. Swallowing seeds…there were other jokes about that. Why did we slice them in arcs so that messes were impossible to avoid? I’ve copped a few in my time. A few in the dark turned out to be pumpkins.

Englands a no-grow area for watermelons so if we want ‘em we have to buy ‘em!

Why, Daisy of course you only eat watermelon outside with yesterdays newspaper as your plate. It makes for any easy clean up. Thanks for a trip down memory lane.

Daisy, I love watermelon, my mama and grandma made us eat them outside and I did the same with my family. They are too messy to eat in the house. We didn’t eat little cubes the way folks do today. We cut huge slices. If we had 6 people we made 6 slices of watermelon, if we had 4 people we cut 4 slices. Now that’s the way to eat watermelon.

We had a watermelon last week. But didn’t have my sister to spit the seeds at. Those were great WARS.
