A poem on the first day of snow … and its effects.

    White and wet
the snowflakes set
    upon the asphalt town.
Pushing slush,
the plowers mush
    their shovels, wearing frowns.

    Closing stores
and cancelled chores
    and meetings limit outings;
keep you safe,
without the chafe
    of harsher tones and poutings.

    Tragedy –
a jagged knee
of road has claimed a life.
Senseless death –
for coffee-breath!
We do not need the strife!

    White and wet
the snowflakes set
    upon the asphalt town.
Pushing slush,
the plowers mush
    their shovels, wearing frowns.

First I felt lulled by the snow and then I felt the reality and dangers that snow brings. Very nice poem.

Though I haven’t seen a snow ever in my life but you clearly described the hazards of encountering one.

I just now learned how to find you. This is the first comment I have ever posted at this site. Guess it did not take too long to learn.

I love the way your poem reads and seeing its shape. I also enjoy writing poetry and making them symmetrical, too.

Your poem reminded me about what happened today. My cat became very excited. So much so that he was almost flying. I asked him what he was so excited about. He led me into the sunroom and looked out the window. I looked out also and saw big puffy snowflakes coming down. My cat always gets very excited over them, and he usually wants me to see them, too.

    Nice meeting you.

Well… aren’t you Mr. Popularity, already. Look what happens when I leave for a few days! j/k

Well done! I’m pleased to find a new poet that I can appreciate. Oh, wait. You found me first!

Very good, Adam! The fact that it’s a personal story makes it even better. Congrats.

  • Adam Henry Sears on Dec 16, 2008

It’s not really a personal story, just based on a true story.

I love the way this poem is written, both in the shape of it and in the metaphors used. I have written one called ‘Snowstorm’ which is quite different but which you might like to read.
