I just wanted to share our experience of the heavy snowfall which has brought Britain to a standstill.

What a night! The worst of the year.

The heavy snowfall has been really severe.

Another foot has fallen in just a few hours

After forecasts had only mentioned snow showers.

Traffic’s at a standstill and airports are closed.

School children have had a holiday imposed.

Passengers on trains stranded overnight

Were glad when an end to their ordeal was in sight.

I opened the front door but there was no way

That we would be going out walking today,

So on went the boots, the scarves and the coats,

And an hour to clearing it we did devote.

At last we were able to open the gate

To the great snowy scenes which for us did await.

It really was worth the hard work that we’d done

To go out and see everyone having such fun.

A huge snowman stood so proud and tall,

A temptation to my hubby to throw a snowball.

Children were squealing in great delight

As he turned on them ready for a snowball fight.

On the beach a puppy buried himself in the snow

Then scampered back and forth putting on quite a show,

Then back via the harbour where skies of dark grey

Threatened that even more snow’s on the way.

The snow that is hitting Europe is in the news over here. Your poem and photos capture the harshness and the beauty, the extra work and the fun.

  • Adrn0919 on Dec 2, 2010

A great poem and thank yo for sharing the pictures. The sad part is it is only the first of December and more months of cold weather to come.

  • jimbob1 on Dec 2, 2010

CR…Tremendous weather update and great use of personal photos…I’m thinking your snow will be wet and heavy due to ocean currents…interesting snowman…ours consist on huge balls of snow stacked on top of each other, but our snow is too dry to form snowballs and snowmen…unfortunately it isn’t too dry to be shovelled and blown about into deep drifts…I voted that I like it…just don’t over exert yourselves…we don’t need you to be writing poems about chest pains, heart attacks and back aches…thanks and take care

Christine, your snow is beautiful. The weather is cold enough for snow here but instead we had high winds and maybe a tornado. About 50 homes were damaged.

Though we don’t have that much of snow where I live boy it snows a lot some 150 Km away from my place. We go to such places to enjoy it, but for you who have it regularly is a problem indeed.

Great poem about the snow. I hope you do not get more snow anytime soon. I do not mind the snow, but I do not want to shovel. In New Jersey, we get a lot of snow during the wintertime.
