I wrote this with the Arizona Immigration Law in mind.

Secure in a haze of sameness

that was once called freedom.

When mistakes are made

they aren’t forgiven anymore.

They used to be.

You were told this was

a land where personal rights

reigned free and segregation

died ages ago. It isn’t true now

but it used to be.

Now they look at you

trying to figure if you ‘belong’

in a land that is made mostly

of people who don’t. Eyes are suspicious

and always have been.
