A whimsical look at all the things that happen in the typical day of a homemaker.

My husband asked when home from work, “What did you do today?”
“Not much,” I replied and thought he wouldn’t want to know anyway.
My doctor also asked once, “What do you do with your time all day?”
And I just couldn’t think of what I wanted to say.
Today wasn’t quite as busy as some but this is sort of how it went:
First I did the dishes, cleaned the counters, and wiped up all the spills,
Made the beds, put the coffee on, and planned all the meals,
Vacuumed the carpet, and mopped the floor.
The doorbell rang so I ran to answer the door –
Just some children asking for donations for their school.
If I could find a dollar or some change, I gave it as a rule.
The phone rang a dozen times or more today –
A wrong number, a sales pitch, and maybe someone had something cheerful to say.
But most of the time someone needed a favor or wanted me to take them somewhere.
How nice it would be to just sit and read in my easy chair!
Then finally in late morning around ten or eleven,
I took time for coffee and the first few sips were like sheer heaven.
Now let me think, “Is today my Ladies Auxiliary or WMU?
I better get out the crock pot and put on a stew.
I used to watch the soaps once in a while,
But the dishes stacked up and the clothes began to pile.
So I gave up daytime TV a long time ago.
Now, if I have a few spare minutes, I usually read or sew.
After super tonight when I finally had a few minutes alone –
Oh no! There it goes again – that telephone!
The next time someone asks me, “What did you do today?”
If they’re willing to listen there is plenty I’d like to say.

I find I never have time enough in the day to do all the things I want to accomplish. I am also 68 and do love to write, paint and to take photographs.
