Got bored one afternoon and looked up the two words-
this is what I did with my afternoon of research.

What is Fiction and what is Fantasy-Is There a Difference?

If you look up the word fiction in a dictionary,

it will tell you works with imaginary characters.

If you look up the word fantasy in a dictionary,

it says an illusion or a fantastic work of fiction.

****

We all know that fiction and fantasy are two words,

but maybe with a fine line drawn between them.

Could it be that they be related in an unusual way?

For at times there is little difference between them.

****

The lord of the rings trilogy could be considered fantasy,

a product of a writer’s vivid imagination put onto paper.

The same thing could be said of the Shrek movie trilogy,

we all know that no ogre is going to rescue a princess.

****

The left behind series could be considered a fiction,

a product of two writers vivid imaginations at work.

But the two authors based their fiction on a lot of facts,

For there fiction matches facts that are found in the bible.

****

The movie Eragon could be an example of fantasy also,

has any of us in the Triond website seen a flying dragon?

Steven King is a very good example of a fictional writer,

for all his characters is nothing but his vivid imagination.

****

Fiction and fantasy can get really complicated sometimes,

sometimes working together but also working separately.

I suppose it all depends on the writer writing his masterpiece,

and the message he wants to convey to his potential readers.

Nice one, payge. Fiction is a work based on something that is logical, fantasy is based on the illogical.

Very interesting concept, they seem sort of interchangable, but to me fiction is much more believable because it is real life events, they just haven’t happened, but looking at it the way you did,I’m almost a fantasy writer myself then. That made me think, thanks Payge.

There is such a fine line between fiction and fantasy. As poets we revel in the freedom that gives us. A good piece.

    Hi Payge
I agree with you that there is a fine line between Fiction and Fantacy.
I am glad also that you mensioned Tolken’s “Lord of the Rings”
Which has inspired my writing and although I am not copying. It is like a great dream or nightmare which I base a lot of my material on as well as events of past and present.
Funny thing is that I have come from an area of historic values where Tolken visited his friend on many occassions.
Please Read my email to you.

Anyway this is very well written obsevation.

Great article! From a former librarian: fiction is generally realistic. It is made up, but it could happen in our world. Fantasy is usually set in a world of the author’s imagination and the characters and events could not really happen.

Nice to meet you, Payge! I am a Fantasy fiction writer myself. I hope we can be friends here at Triond.
