Poem describing music, and what it is to all of us.

From the four corners of the earth
The sounds reach our ears
Sometimes soft and soothing
Sometimes creating fear

The volumes can cause destruction
Or help build a life brand new
Sometimes too loud to handle
Sometimes a bit subdued

It is a part of history
And has history all its own
Sometimes it destroys barriers
Sometimes it makes us feel alone

Each scale has its own meaning
Each sound has its own tone
Sometimes it’s smooth as velvet
Sometimes it’s chilling to the bone

There’s no necessary number
But instruments are a plenty
Sometimes there’s just one singer
Sometimes there’s just one key

It can be written down on paper
It can be taught to us by rote
Sometimes it is improvised
Sometimes memory serves each note

It can be used to tell us stories
It can describe just how we feel
Sometimes it’s used for politics
Sometimes it’s used to heal

Sometimes it has a reason
Sometimes it has no aim
For each culture it is different
But for each culture it’s just the same

For each it is expression
To a few a means to an end
Sometimes we can’t understand it
But Music is human’s friend
