What Were You Undertaking?
——————-0——————
Don’t come to me in anguish, on your bruised knees like a suitor,
To beg a piece of my life to fill some empty chasm
You imagined in your fantasy of power and seduction
When you thought about the many times you wished you had a feeling
Or a passion or religion when all you really needed
Was to say you don’t know something you thought you should have memorized.
But you were undertaking to fulfill the lies you promised
And the jester that you worship only takes the golden visa
That is offered with the left hand to the gypsy fortune teller
That doesn’t see you crying when you shed your inhibitions
And ask someone to hold your hand and look into your eyes
That lie and sparkle when they steal and chuckle when they cry.
The miasma of you oozing from the newly ruptured derma
In the corner of the valley that illuminates your memory
Of the way life used to be when the sun rose every morning
And the birds they were a –chirping and the clouds above the rainbows
Circled Venus like a polka at a wedding where the organ player died.
