Cooking is not my favourite pastime.

Image via Wikipedia

What’s for dinner tonight, dear?

These words I hear each day.

And the sound of them tripping from my hubby’s tongue

Usually fill me with dismay.

*

I wasn’t born a natural cook

And though I like to eat,

The thought of preparing a tasty meal

Brings forth an air of defeat.

*

I have a repertoire of dishes

Which never seems to vary,

And does nothing to titillate a palate,

The results often being scary.

Image via Wikipedia

I can cook up pasta by the bucket

And add a ready made sauce.

I can put fish and chips in the oven

With any veggies I come across.

Image via Wikipedia

Image via Wikipedia

I can make a roast Sunday dinner

Which as a rule is fairly edible,

But ask me to produce a fancy meal

And the results would be quite terrible.

*

So asking me what’s for dinner, dear.

I am sure you can hazard a guess,

And if it’s not what you want to eat

Why don’t you show me your cooking prowess?

Hahaha! I empathise. I occasionally come up with a good meal but David’s the whizz. I got it sussed, he cooks half the time.

CR…Sneaky little devil!!! Show me your cooking prowess…Cute, very cute!!! Sounds like something I’ve heard before!!! I like this one so like everything else of yours that I have read, I voted that I Like It…Thanks
P.S. Talking about fish and chips…there is a restaurant here in Winnipeg called The Brit that has just been voted one of the top three English restaurants in the world…they still serve fish and chips in newspaper..I’m vegan, but remember having my fish and chips wrapped in newspaper in Twickenham, Middlesex several years ago…

What’s for dinner tonight dear is something I never have too say, as my wife is an Excellent cook. Yes she really is happiest in her kitchen cooking and baking.
The only problem is she still cooks for four, even though the kids have long flown the nest!! As a result I’m getting bigger and bigger, still washing all the dishes after dinner helps keep my weight down!!
Excellent fun poem Christine, your really cooking!!

Hehehehahahahaha! I’m not a bad cook and will often follow a recipe if I’m not familiar with the dish .. but they reckon men are better cooks than women Ha! I think you’re born into cuisinedom too Christine and if my partner don’t like what I put in front of him, you can guarantee he’ll be cooking the following night ;-) ~ loved this piece Christine :-)

If not for microwave’s and fast food I’d starve! Fun rhyme Christine.

  • Ruby Hawk on May 1, 2010

Christine, I’m with you. I am a plain cook and it is bothersome to be trying to think of something new to cook. I can cook cakes, pies, and plain meals but as you say, don’t expect me to cook anything fancy.

  • monica55 on May 1, 2010

I don’t have a big variety in our weekly menu either: It’s bake chicken on Sundays, Fish on Mondays, pot roast on Tuesdays…. Of course these are served with some type of carbohydrates and vegetables. So my hubs knows what to expect. There’s not much more to it, except that I don’t like to cook either, but do it because I have to. A great write Christine : Funny and playful as usual.

  • johnnydod on May 2, 2010

Wonderful Christine your true to life poems are magic..
Try this one on hubby and see what he says?
    you will need
    1½ pounds asparagus, steamed
    2 largknobs of butter
    three quarter cup bread crumbs
and a quarter cup Parmesan cheese, finely grated

Butter a baking dish, then arranged steamed, well-drained asparagus in a single layer
Cut the remaining butter into small pieces, then combine with bread crumbs and cheese. Use your fingers to mix and squish everything together into buttery crumbs. Sprinkle over the asparagus.
Broil 2-3 minutes, until the crumbs just turn golden – check frequently or the crumbs will burn.
use fresh bread crumbs and freshly grated Parmesan, store bought crumbs and pre grated Parmesan will detract greatly.

Its easy to do and as long as he likes Asparagus your onto a winner, good luck Christine

I loved your poem. Your hubby sounds like a few people I know very well. You would think that people would be thankful for what they get if they are not the ones who have to cook it.
