This is a poem about the scenes in our city that caused pain and hearaches.

Gloom, doom and sorrowful sights,

Hit our cities over night.

Fighters, looters wrecking towns,

Turning cars up-side-down. “What’s this?” A Language Thing.

Setting light to people’s things,

Life long treasures in th bins,

Shattered buildings, smashed and booted,

Cash machines rooted and looted. “What’s this?” A Language Thing.

Watching, staring and blocking off streets,

Police force trying to keep the peace.

Out-numbered by gangs who wouldn’t listen, took rampage and ignored the whistle.

“Too late my friends,” They yelled and preached,

Disguised in hoddies, they owned the streets. “What’s this?” A language Thing.

People’s lives in disaray, homes burned down in smoke so gray.

Lives lost!

For what?

Dray, cray, fray, oh pray ………. “What’s this?” A Language Thing.

Stole, rummaged, fetched and grabbed,

Trainers, mobiles and designer bags.

Starkey’s message announced with glee,

Welcomed by some, others in plea.

They cried and begged for peace in our cities, Stand up! Be counted!

There’s no time for pity.

Nitty, gritty, ritty, chitty ………….. “What’s this?” A Language Thing.

A painted picture of changing trends,

Language and cultures wearing thin,

Angry messages portrayed so clear,

Gangs paraded, showed no fears.

Weird, greed, need, seed ……….. “What’s this?” A language Thing.

Gangs out-numbered, all turned around,

A few days later, there wasn’t a sound.

Police force fought and cleared the streets,

Reviewed the evidence and caught the thieves.

Weaved, sheeved, keeved, beeved ………. “What’s this?” A Language Thing.

Consequences severely put into place, pay back time

It was the case.

Pace, base, chase, race ………….. “What’s this?” A Language Thing.

WAS IT REALLY A LANGUAGE THING? ……………………
