Too often we may find that we are beating our self down over past mistakes, fasilures, bad things that once happened, a gray cloud hanging over us and stalling our way to future happiness. Carrying all our yesterdays around like a burden on our back will never undo or change one thing…all it does is keep us from moving onward and upward to higher ground.
When gray clouds are hanging over me
raining memories best forgotten,
grief that I should never have known,
my day usually turns out rotten,
leaving me chilled and melancholy
and wallowing in remorse;
A gray cloud hanging over me,
nothing seems much worse…
But when I seek shelter from this storm
in my Savior, my heart starts to sing,
when I lean on Him, give my day to Him
it changes everything.
When I put the past behind me,
forgive that which once caused me pain
and sorrows and don’t hold grudges
soon the sun starts to shine again
and there are blue skies smiling over me
and joy comes ‘round a hundred fold.
When I’m not wadding through puddles of regret
or wallowing in old sorrows I still hold,
not drag ‘round all my yesterdays
and the past stew and fret,
worry the things once caused me grief,
sad times I would best forget,
when I find the courage and the strength
to lay the past to rest,
before long the gray clouds vanish
and the day grows warm and bright.
Learning to forgive the past
makes today’s burdens light.
When gray skies hover over me
it’s best to pack the past away.
We can’t go back, undo the hurts,
relive one yesterday.
Each time I toss out a hurt
that space fills as with sparkling gold
and some of life’s gray gets washed away
as joy flows in a hundred fold.
Don’t let the past muddy up your life,
cause chilled, damp, gray days;
we’ve made it through, no turning back,
we can’t change it anyway.
We can hear, say I’m sorry ten thousand times,
but what is already done, is done.
Pick up the pieces and keep moving on
with your face turned toward the Son.
