I found this poem in a file which I wrote many years ago but those memories are still fresh in my mind.

How well I remember my days as a child

When we struggled to pay all the bills.

When Mum and Dad used to worry so much

It was making them both quite ill.

*

Dad was a lift engineer and ran his own firm,

And though plenty of orders came his way,

He found that his customers, while enjoying his toil,

Needed chasing up to get them up to pay.

*

I remember coming home for lunch from school

To an omelette shared between three.

How I longed to stay for lunch at school

If we could only have had them for free.

*

Friday I remember was our special day.

We would have homemade fish and chips.

And I was sent to the shop for a brick of ice cream

Which would soon have us licking our lips.

*

As I grew older Saturday was the day

When I cleaned the house right through.

And while Mum and Dad did the food shop

I cooked spotted dick and Irish stew.

Yes times were hard but we learnt to cope.

And it helped to make us all strong,

So that as we grew up with families of our own

We always managed when things went wrong.

*

We passed on all the lessons we learnt

So our children would appreciate what they had.

And now they are having children themselves

They’re teaching the values taught by their mums and dads.

You’ve brought back memories for me Christine. We sometimes forget we can live on much less.

  • pruelpo on Nov 1, 2011

This poem also reminds me of my past – I grew up with hardship in life. I started living my own at age 14 now I am already married.

Beautiful Poem, nice memories. What I loved most about it, is that you stayed together as a family. That is such a big blessing and gives kids emotional stability…. which helps them later in life…. to build their own family up strong.

Oh… I think I got all sentimental in this Poem. lol. Look at what your words did to me, Christine. :)

Ps. I couldnt join that facebook group you noted, cos it takes always prompts about “leaving a secure Connection” which gets me paranoid, but Thanxxx.

Brings back my childhood memories as well. Good piece Christine.

A lovely poem, Christine. You paint beautiful images with your words. Those times were harder, but I think that there was more stability. People worked together, and as you said, skills were passed down through the generations. I think that as technology is making our lives easier (?) it is also making the skills we used to learn from our parents obsolete. Who does canning and butchering anymore, when it is so much easier, and even cheaper, to buy our food. Who sews their own clothes, when buying fabric is more expensive than buying clothes? We don’t even have a fabric store here anymore.

Sorry for raining on your parade (or ranting on your poem). I feel sometimes like I am sending my girls out into the world without so many of the skills I learned from my mother and grandmother, but our lives today are just too busy.

How nicely written. The values we learned from the hard lessons of life sustain us even today. While others are contemplating suicide we know better days are coming because we have overcome hardships before. Thank you for sharing.

Your poem was very moving. I agree with Lady Elena and I love the fact that you all remained a family no matter what.

Cristine,it’s so true. We had a tough time growing up and it taught me frugality. I will go without anytime before going into debt. We passed it on to our children and they adhere to the same rule.

This poem is really worth sharing. It is beautiful.

  • Melody SJAL on Nov 1, 2011

Guess we had a little harder problems then as our family’s a lot bigger than yours. But yes, we did cope with God’s help. Nice piece, Christine.

I can identify. We didn’t have an easy time either. It makes me appreciate what we have now.

I remember mom being so careful with the budget. We had a family of four and we all packed lunches but she would always keep the grocery bill under $16. a week.

Great poem. You’re lucky you are able to preserve your old poems. I used to write a lot before but I have thrown most of them away.
