My remembrances from the events on September 11 ,2001 when I worked as a civilian for the Department of the Air Force in Crystal City next to the Pentagon.
The sun was so bright
In a sky so blue
Light clouds were forming
Floating in the wind
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
Slowly making way
‘long I Ninety-Five
To catch a quick plane
For Boston Town today
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
Pentagon in view
Veer off the freeway
Head to the office
To pick up some work
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
Background news is on
But thinking ahead
News break is declared
Anxious voice intoned
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
I pull to the curb
Radio goes up
A plane has just crashed (8:46AM AA Flt 11)
Into the first tower
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
Thoughts race in my head
What is happening
This monstrosity
Who could have done this
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
Newscasters ponder
Repeating themselves
Until, OH MY GOD!
IT’S HAPPENED AGAIN (9:37 AM UA flt 175)
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
No doubt now, it’s clear
The planes became bombs
Their loads, our martyrs
Their target, our soul
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
Realization
Dawned, horror was real
A fight once far was
America’s war
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
News must be passed
Trip long forgotten
Parked, up the stairs
Walked into the office
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
Looked all about
The new day just dawned
People busily working
Unaware we were at war
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
I spread the word
We find a TV
Gathering ’round
To catch up with New York
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
Twin Towers burning
People wandering
Everyone is stunned
Announcers drone on
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
Who attacked us
Terrorists for sure
al-Qaeda is mentioned
Who else could it be
On that fateful day,
September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.
Are we next I say?
Wondering aloud
9:37
Pentagon was hit
On that fateful day,
