A poem for my civics class based on the Civil Rights Era.

Where Was Love?

Where was love? Where did it go?

After all these years, we still don’t know

Their hearts filled with hope; pride was in their eyes;

But after the war, they still had to hide.

To hate is to love, and to love is to hate.

Whites were the sharks; blacks were the bait.

Some murdered and tortured; help came too late.

Was this really their terrible fate? How much longer would

they have to wait?

They came to learn of freedom

Instead, they were harassed and beaten.

Tears appeared, not one eye dried.

Their hearts were broken and their dreams had died.

Some stood standing and held their heads high

They still dream of spreading wings to fly

They used nonviolence to fight hate back.

They didn’t kick and they didn’t smack.

More deaths happened, more tombs were built.

Monsters laughed with no sign of guilt.

What had happened to this beautiful land?

Why were they killed by the white man’s hand?

Souls shattered and cities were torn.

No one was spared;

Not even newborns.

Day after day, people still mourn.

A wise man once said, “The past is the past.”

We each carry scars that won’t heal so fast,

But people of history have prove time and again

Open hearts are what makes the hate end.

But I still wonder, even today,

Where was love when we needed it the most?
