June 14th is the U.S. Army’s birthday and the old Army Air Corps was created on June 20th and Independance Day is just around the corner. There’s a small posting at the VA hospital in Tampa, Florida that is the inspiration for the following that I tried to put to rhyme.

There’s been many a preacher who spoke from the pulpit teaching us all how to live.
But no matter how forceful the message, freedom of religion they did not give.

Famous reporters have travelled the globe to bring us news of great joy and sadness.
We may know their names ‘though some are unknown but none gave us freedom of the press.

We have read many books by great authors and poets and taken some home within easy reach.
While these writers entertained us you must agree they did not give us freedom of speech.

Some universities are more liberal than others and campus organizers I’ve seen like fools resemble.
But neither the schools nor the fools who like to get on TV are those who gave the freedom to assemble.

There are Democrats and Republicans and Independents, too–politicians and statesmen of note,
But governor, president, senator or whatever–none gave us the freedom to vote.
Who gave us these freedoms?  IT WAS A VETERAN!

Great political poem, writing on a good issue and so true.

True to the word. A lot of soldiers are riddled by bullets and a few surviving veterans may not even enjoy freedom with nightmares of actual combat while politicians have placed all those lives in harms way in the first place. Right in the middle of a battlefield and withdrawing support, now they are asking for votes (spare the good ones).
