If I had to answer that question in one word, I would say "habit."

Many fortunate individuals never want to eat more or less than they need to maintain their ideal weight. When they exercise a great deal they eat more heartily than when they spend a quiet day at home; and if they have a huge Thanksgiving dinner at noon, they just aren’t hungry for the next meal. Their appetites are regulated by their requirements, and they seldom develop bad eating habits. People who don’t go above or below their normal weights usually have appestats that are set exactly right. In many people, however, the appestat is easily influenced or conditioned by habit. On the other hand, people who don’t get enough to eat for some time may develop poor appetities. Children coming from families that love food and make a happy event out of each meal, often grow up to be adults whose appestats are set too high, while those from homes where meal times are unpleasant, the food skimpy and poorly prepared, may have low appestats. Emotional factors can play an important part in overeating or undereating. People who feel lonely and unwanted often eat a great deal because it is one of their few pleasures. Women with small children have frequently told me they eat simply in order to have something to do, being bored by having to stay how so much, or because it makes them feel calmer and better able to cope with the children. On the other hand, worry and tension can also keep people from eating, together with such psychological squirks as the desire from attention and sympathy. Deep psychological problems naturally call for the help of a specialist.

A good look at two problems in western society, particularly eating too much. I was recently doing volunteer wok encouraging people to think about healthy waist measurements and the health issues that are statistically more common in people with a waist measurement that is too high.
It was a sobering thing to realise that most of the people who walked past my seat were well over the healthy waist line measurement for their gender.

I guess it is like human nature, very few people are balanced in their outlook or reactions…

Interesting article, an issue more complicated than we would like to think! :)

For me it’s my addiction to sugar. If it’s sweet, then I want it. Of course, now I am more aware and don’t eat as much of the goodies as I used to.

Good analysis, better than saying ‘Oh they’re just greedy’ for example

I agree to every single word you said here. However my inclination would be towards the psychological issues. Stress of any sort can disrupt the normal eating habits. Probably there is a congenital factor as well, and researches are being carried on to establish the same.
