A Remembrance/Veteran’s Day poem I wrote for a local student writing contest.

Why Do We Remember

Why do we remember

Lives previously spent

Gather each November

And sorely we lament

The lives that have been lost

To keep our country free

The young men knew the cost

To fight across the sea

Why do we remember

The terror on the battlefield

The bodies in the ember

The cries of men who’s fates are sealed

Brothers, sons, fathers, friends

Nephews, uncles, neighbors, cousins

All of them meet their violent ends.

White crosses mark them; dozens upon dozens

Why do we remember

It’s all so very true:

Each one of them risks their life

To make life good for you
