Why Eve ate the apple.
God breathed the breath of life
And Eve sighed.
Eyelids flickered open and Eve
Glimpsed a Glory
The face of Love.
And Eve loved.
In her human love
The greatest Lover of all.
But alas !
She was created to be
The consort of Adam the Gardener.
She obeyed but never forgot
The Glory that she first beheld
In the dream -state of her birth.
******
Friday afternoon, Adam asleep in the shade,
Replete with fruit, intoxicating and sweet
Restless, Eve wandered.
A hissing whistling sound
She followed it
Into the very midst
Of Eden, the spot
Where Adam had not
Taken her-ever, -
The forbidden spot where stood
The tree
Of Good and Evil.
She saw,
The beautiful tree, at once in flower and fruit
All ripe and luscious and tempting
Alluring scent, tantalizing colour
And a sinuous sinewy form wound around
” Eve, Eve, come and taste
The forbidden fruit reserved
Only for the great,”
“No! No!”
“Did God forbid you?” Hissed the sly deceiver
“Yes.”
“He is a jealous master
Aand does not share
His power.
He who eats this Divine Fruit
Would become another God
Don’t you remember?
The dream-state
Of your birth?
Eat! Eat!
Adam and Eve,
Gods in the Garden of Eden”
****
Eve took the fruit
The red juice spurted out
As her white teeth
Bit greedily.
And when Adam woke
He found a strange
Attraction in the veiled secrecy
Of Eve’s eyes
Which he had not seen before.
“Eat,” said she and Adam ate
Fascinated by the scent
Of the fruit
On her lips.
*******
At eventide,
In the shades of the Garden
Footsteps .
“Adam! Adam! Where are you?”
Eve & Adam
Looking at each other
Find
Fear, for the first time
And the darkness and separation
Of guilt
Torment
Hide! Hide!
The nakedness
Shorn of the garment of Glory.
