Layering is the style of the season.

Image via Wikipedia

I shiver from my blankets,
And flee my chilly room;
Must not be late for work,
So across the house I zoom.

I light the scary antique heater
And bask in its radiant glow.
When the bathroom is nice and toasty
Into the shower I go.

Fluffy bathrobe, morning tea,
Give the morning news a read,
Cast the clock a silent plea,
Then armor up gainst daily need.

First the basics, then thermal wear;
Two pair of socks, and heavy slacks
To ward against the winter air,
Three sweaters to ward icy attacks.

Gloves and hat, heavy coat,
A hand-knitted scarf wrapped
Around my scratchy throat.
I feel hampered, entrapped

In all this wintry gear…
Couldn’t it just be summer
All through the year?

    Daisy, you need to move to Florida.

  • ken bultman on Dec 12, 2009

    Screw Florida. Skyrocketing taxes are driving people to Georgia and Tennessee. Last year was the first since 1946 that more people moved out of Florida than moved in. Loved the poem. Could really visualize your preparations for the frigid onslaught. I’ve been there. Still have the winter clothes and boots.

    Nice little poem with great imagery. Endless summer? Wouldn’t want that. I need variety and change.

    Daisy, I wish it could be summer all year. I hate to bundle up to go out and still be chilled to the bone. It’s the very reason I don’t have my Xmas done yet. In fact I’ve hardly started.

    Hi Daisy! I loved your picture of what I call Winter Wonderland trees!
    Here in Nebraska, our winter is in full force with low temperatures and snow at least a foot high from the first real snowfall we just received this past week.
    Layering on the clothes is a pain in the neck…and definitely hampers the ability to move! But for the next few months I will just have a Good Excuse for not being able to do too many things around the house!!! Lol
