Security can be found in the night.
Within the Shadows
I step into the shadow, and out of the light
Where every eye may examine my movements.
There’s a comfort here that I find nowhere else:
Night’s deep caverns shield and protect me.
Here in the black is relief from the day,
From the judgment and rules that belong to it.
I’m free to sigh and dream where no soul can find mine,
Wrapped in this ever-cool blanket.
Within this lightless world is a beauty so rare,
Something felt rather than seen.
It seeps in through the pores, till I become another of its shadows,
Free in dark’s blinding glare.
A wickedness lurks here as well…
but, forgive me, that is part of the appeal.
A hint of danger, of the secrets of the night,
Has a pull of its own for some.
Each night I wish for it to last,
So I may stay in its safety for a time.
So that, even thought I must inevitably go back into the light,
I might go with the self that I find in the night.
