Things don’t always go the way we expect them to.
You were scared
I was in shock
Had waited months for this night
Thought it would be our salvation
Not the cause of a fight
Seeing you
My heart did skip a beat
(Did yours too?)
Wish we could’ve talked
So many things to say
I could feel your love in your touch
Your nerves in your lack of eye contact
You obviously didn’t like how things were playing out
And you knew I was mad and drowning in doubt
We needed time alone
A chance to breathe
But the back porch was never open
And you were too lost to see me in the hall it seems
If you had stayed longer
Not used our boy as your excuse to bow out
Listened to us begging you to reconsider
Looked at us and not through us
Found the same peace in our little family that was lulling him to sleep
Perhaps things would be different
Perhaps we wouldn’t be suffering from lack of sleep
Now I’m scared of what will happen next
And you’re shocked at how you behaved
We clearly need a “do over”
Are you free later today?
