Taking a quote about power vs. liberty and analyzing it with a modern day perspective.

“It is a strange desire to seek power & to lose liberty.” Frances Bacon
Strange but not inexplicable. People see the person in power & envy them all that they have, without realizing all the responsibility that goes with it as well as all that they had to give up or do without in order to have that power. Responsibility for ones own life & ones children is one thing, but the responsiblity that goes with being in a position of power is a loss of freedom. You can no longer just do something without too much thought as to the consequences, because your every move has a ripple effect, & the higher your position the bigger the waves. Take the presidency-please, I sure as hell wouldn’t want it! Every decision, every discussion, affects an entire country, & many of those decisions affect the world. You can’t take a vacation without staff, secret service & photographers-sorry, to me that is not a vacation! You have to put your family second, & your children will be remarked upon any time they do something, like graduate, drop-out, marry, etc, even tho they never held office. Even actors children get more privacy than that! On top of that there is absolutely no privacy. Even in your own apartments in the White House there is still Secret Service & staff. Obviously for some people the price is worth the position, & some even do well with it ,but others crash & burn, either because they really can’t handle the responsibility even tho they don’t mind the price, or because they can’t handle the price & have already paid it without realization of what the cost was until to late. Privacy & liberty for me please.
