The attitude towards homosexuality as seen through quotes.
Freud said it was not an illness and these days it should not be considered that but a choice in life. One went through the sixties thinking so until the American Medical Foundation changed their tune and took this off their list of mental diseases. Today there are laws guaranteeing the inheritance of the property from a same sex partner and gay marriage has been legalized so there must have been some changes along the way for the betterment of the quality of life for those choosing to live with a same sex partner. Interestingly enough there are quotes from some historical figures that occurred during the emancipation of gay, during the gay right movement period and in recent times.
The lack of codification of gay rights has been prevalent in the US and it is not surprising that Bush junior was quoted as saying he would not pass new laws encoding them. He did though mention something about not wanting to harass them but unfortunately I think that harassment will still occur because laws that guarantee same sex marriage, the inheritance of property mentioned above and other rights are still far from reach in the states.Bush wanted a toning down in this statement probably referring to the pro-gay demonstrations and parades around the world.
Anita Bryant was and probably still is anti-gay in her remark about the nonexistence of Adam and Bruce as the first couple. Too bad she had only referred to the ‘original couple’ when historically there have successfully bonded same sex couples and same sex attraction is even seen in the animal kingdom, not to mention the presence of genetic material that was shown to exist in certain chromosomes of homosexual males that is not present in their heterosexual counterparts. Back in the day of the first people there was no DNA testing anyway.
Boy George made a poignant remark about gays just wanting sex and heterosexuals wanting love. Apparently he is right when one hears of many couples on both sides wanting love and others wanting just sexual pleasure for whatever reason that one might hear on the Dr. Laura show, like traumatic experiences the male or woman may have had in the family impeding them from ever wanting intimacy with the opposite sex.
Then was Bette Davis who referred to gay artists as being more creative than the average male. She must have met a few during her long career as a film actress in Hollywood. There has been a certain sensitivity that has been associated to the homosexual especially those in the arts milieu where there is a good concentration of gay artists, dancers and performers. Even Frank Zappa made a comment that there would be no progress unless there were some deviation from the norm. Perhaps that can include the sensitivity towards the arts that Davis alluded too, that does deviate from the average male appreciation of certain performance art.
