A comparison of the underground and mainstream rap worlds.
Now before i start with this rant I’d like to inform the reader that this is just my opinion and not to get offended (which i don’t think anyone will). I am a big music fan, music is a huge part of my life and who i am. I listen to almost every genre, my favorite is what you would call rap and i would call underground horror core. Out of all the different worlds of music hip-hop is the most controversial and like everything else it has two sides to it. There’s the mainstream side which is all the commercial bullshit of selling your soul to the devil or (record labels) to get phat rides and hot women. It’s all about the money to them where on the other side the underground is what music is truly about, expressing your thoughts and feelings through melody and lyrics, its a form of art.
If you look at mainstream it is all the same, every song is about either selling drugs, having nice cars, and being rich. Like that’s all there is to life, to me it seems and feels like brainwashing whenever i hear it. Adding negative to an already negative world is not a good combination. Underground isn’t as pure as I’m making it sound though there is negative in it as well, but underground artists negativity is from real life experience and feelings. Where 90% mainstream artist are fake and are only rapping about what’s selling or appeals to people. There are however a handful of mainstream rappers that i hold to be “real” for example Kanye West, DMX, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Dead Pres, and etc. So basically my point is that underground artist lack the recognition and respect they deserve for being true artists and mainstream is given more credit than they deserve for being artist.
