A play based on her diary entries.
Anne Frank Play:
It’s 1944. We are in the Secret Annexe and Mr. Dussel and Anne are sleeping.
SCENE 1 – In Anne and Mr. Dussel’s room…
*At Night*
Mr. Dussel is snoring and keeps waking Anne up. Suddenly a bomb drops and they are both woken up. Mr. Dussel is a bit flustered and Anne has a chock.
Anne: ‘What’s happening?’
Mr. Dussel: ‘Go to sleep child.’
Anne walks towards the window and looks out. Mr. Dussel pulls her away.
Mr. Dussel: ‘Keep away from the window.’
Anne: ‘Why?’
Mr. Dussel: ‘Because it is dangerous. The Nazis could see us. And don’t you question me child.’
Anne: ‘I’m going down to the living room to find out what’s happening and don’t call me a child. I’m 14 you know!’
Mr. Dussel: ‘Disobedient child.’
SCENE 2- Meanwhile in the Van Daan’s room…
Mrs. Van Daan is very scared:
Mrs. VD: ‘PUTTI, PUTTI, PUTTI!!’
Mr. VD (In annoyed voice): ‘Yes?’
Mrs. VD: ‘I heard a bomb outside! Is the invasion coming?’
Mr. VD: ‘No, there is no invasion coming, now go back to sleep!’
Mrs. VD: ‘I can’t. I’m going down to the living room.’
She walks out, smacks the door behind her and opens it again.
Mrs. VD: ‘PUTTI!’
Mr. Van Daan groans and follows her.
SCENE 3 – In the living room…
Everybody sits around the table and they turn on the radio…
Mr. VD: ‘There’s nothing about an invasion.’
Mrs. VD: ‘Disappointing…’
Margot: ‘Yes, but hopefully it will come soon.’
Mrs. VD: ‘Until then you Frank’s owe me some yoghurt.’
All the Franks groan.
Anne: ‘You have much more than us!’
Mrs. VD: ‘A bet’s a bet, tough.’
SUDDENLY Mr. Dussel bursts into the room…
Mr. Dussel: ‘SOMEBODY HAS BEEN HERE! They know we’re here!’
Mrs. VD: ‘We’re all going to die!’
Mr. VD: ‘Everybody calm down. What has happened?’
Mr. Dussel: ‘The doors to the warehouse are wide open and our door is broken!’
Margot: ‘Oh no!’
Anne: ‘Burglars.’
Margot: ‘Anything missing?’
Mr. Dussel: ’Yes, Kraler’s portfolio.’
Mrs. VD: ‘All children leave the room, us adults must talk.’
Anne: ‘We live here too!’
Mr. Dussel: ‘Yes, but this is adult talk.’
Margot and Anne leave the room.
Mrs. VD: ‘What will we do if they find us?’
Mr. VD: ‘We don’t know if the burglar saw us.’
Mr. Dussel: ‘Or if he or she will tell the Nazis’
Mr VD: ‘We can’t be sure that the Nazis will find our Secret Annexe. For now we will just have to keep low profile.’
SCENE 4 – Breakfast next day
Anne: ‘I didn’t sleep at all last night. Mr. Dussel kept on snoring.’
Dussel: ‘Because you were moving!’
Margot: ‘Both of you be quiet. I have a bad headache.’
Mr VD: ‘Because of what happened yesterday I don’t think we should flush the W.C’
Mrs. VD: ‘Oh Putti! I’m going to lurch’
Margot: ‘I can’t stand being here.’
Anne: ‘I know. One more month with the Van Daans I’m going to die.’
Both look at each other nodding. They all leave the table and do their things.
