A modern translation of the famous Shakespeare play Macbeth, Act five Scene eight.

Act 5 Scene 8

(Macbeth by himself, slow questioning)

Macbeth: Why should I die alone if I can make others share this pain?

Enter Macduff

(Macduff storms in and points violently with sword, yelling)

Macduff: Look at me, you Bastard!

(draw sword, calmly, dramatically and slowly)

Macbeth: I’ve avoided everyone but you. (Turns his back) Leave now my conscience is full with guilt already.

(Still very enraged)

Macduff: I speak with my actions not my words because they cannot describe your evil.

(Charges with sword)

Fight

(Macbeth and Macduff are locked together with swords)

Macbeth: You’re wasting your breath. It is impossible for you to kill me. I am invincible to all men born naturally.

(Smirking)

Macduff: You’re not invincible to me. (Pause while Macbeth starts to look concerned) I was born unnaturally.

Macbeth: (Slowly, dramatically) Youliar! (more normal) If this is true, (pauses) then I can’t(To himself) These damned witches deceived me. (Towards Macduff loud and stern) I won’t fight you. fight you.

(pushes Macbeth off of him, loud)

Macduff: Then surrender you coward, (more quiet) and maybe you’ll live to see another day. We will lock you up so that we can tell everyone (lean back and yell out) Here you can see the Tyrant!

(Voice raised)

Macbeth: I won’t surrender and be forced to worship the ground the Malcolm walks upon! (Spits at Macduff’s feet) Even though Birnam wood is moving toward Dunsinane, and you were born unnaturally, (yell) I won’t back down. (cracks a smile, mocking tone) Let’s go Macduff. Now we fight to the death (elongate death)

Fight

Macbeth viciously attacks Macduff, intense long fight

Macduff stabs Macbeth in the heart (Ketchup explodes)

Macbeth falls to the ground, looks up in shock and dies

Macduff drags Macbeths body out and chops off head

Enter Malcolm, Siward, Ross, with flags

(all standing in semi-circle, empathetic)

Malcolm: Many good men were lost in this battle.

(strong tone)

Siward: Soldiers die in every battle, but today, it was a small price to pay for such a great victory.

Malcolm: Macduff is missing, and your son as well, Siward.

(puts hand on Siward’s shoulder)

Ross: Siward, your son has made the ultimate sacrifice. He lived to be a man, and soon after proved his greatness as a soldier. He died, a mans death.

(Stuttering, grabs Ross)

Siward: My son, he’s dead?

Ross: Yes, and he was carried off the field. Don’t measure your grief by his worth to us or your grief will have no meaning.

(Composed and strong again)

Siward: Well then, he is a solder of god. If I had a thousand sons, I couldn’t wish for a better end for them. He is in peace.

Malcolm: I will grieve your son as well.

Siward: You don’t need to. He fought and died bravely, so God will reward him.

(Points to entrance) Oh! Here comes Macduff.

Enter Macduff with Macbeths head

Macduff: Hail, King! For that is your title now. (Gesture to head) Here is our enemies sinful head. We are free! (Raises sword in victory) I see you are will all the nobles. They share my excitement as well. Hail, King of Scotland!

(Cheering)

All: Hail, King of Scotland!

Malcolm: We won’t waste any time. You will all be rewarded for your loyalty. My Thanes and Kinsman! You will be the first Earls of Scotland. We will bring back all our exiled friends, who fled Macbeths rule, showing us the true accomplices of Macbeth and his devilish Queen. This is surely a gift from god which we will repay in time. So I give my thanks to everyone here and invite you all to see me crowned at Scone.
