Something I wrote for a show I did in college.

(lights come up on a SPEAKER is standing on stage)

I hate the way that love is portrayed in the movies. It’s always the same thing, especially in chick flicks. Ready for the formula: Meg Ryan or Meg Ryan’s daughter played by the hip new actress of the moment, runs into the flash-in-the-pan hunk. They love each other but don’t know how to express it to each other. Their friends of the same sex then talk them into finally doing it. Then something terribly happens to keep them from showing love as if it was in a movie… oh wait. But of course the lovers prevail and it ends in a marriage or a planned marriage. CUT, PRINT, and JUST PUT SOMETHING WITH LOVE IN THE TITLE.

But that isn’t love or at least that isn’t all that love is. Love is doing something that gives you pain and still look forward to the next time you do it. That’s why it hurts the first time you have sex because it should be love. It’s knowing that you would be willing to take out another person from this world so you wouldn’t have to share them with people. That is love. Love is knowing that tomorrow you may never have another chance to share moments with others. Love is grabbing that brass ring and knowing that no one will think less of you or more of you for you just being you.

Love isn’t just a movie or a coincidence of events. Love is real. Love is unknown. Love cannot be labeled. And this is Life. And Life isn’t something with love in the title
