A quick play I had to write for theatre class. I had a very offset dream that a major producer would pick up the story and i’d become rich. Well, one can hope.

(The time is late afternoon, the sun is starting to set. SHIRLEY is sitting in a chair in a waiting room. It is a very slow day with a few people passing through.((Feel free to use characters found later in the show for these extras)) The nurses desk can either be empty or have one girl behind it, NURSE, To add in a extra character, ad lib any lines for this character that you would feel necessary, very few though. The mood on stage should be sad, and the set should be a typical hospital waiting room. Chairs and tables, magazines and flowers. Feel free to add in anything else that might add to the hospital feel. A spotlight should be on SHIRLEY. SHIRLEY is talking into a cell phone and holding back tears. The cell phone should be one of those old models, the year is 1986.)

SFX: Ring…..Ring…..Ring….(Offstage) Hello?

SHIRLEY: Hello, Prudence? It’s me, Shirley.

PRUDENCE: Shirley? You don’t usually call out of the blue. Whats wrong?

SHIRLEY: Why would you assume that somethings wrong? Can’t a friend just call another friend to talk?

PRUDENCE: I guess. So what did you have in mind to talk about?

SHIRLEY: Well,(Pause long enough for someone to walk across the stage) My daughter just had another child, so it’ll be nice to hear more little feet pitter pattering around during the holidays and-

PRUDENCE: Now I know you didn’t call for small talk. Whats wrong?

SHIRLEY: Well, if you must know…(Pause)

PRUDENCE: Well, what Shirley? Spit it out!
