Mod18 for my intro to sociology class.
One coalition that I can remember being a part of took place earlier this school year. It was for the Student Union and, although I am not a member of S.U., I was still able to join this temporary group for a common cause. Many students here at Loras enjoy chicken nugget day, or night depending on when they are served, but felt that chicken nuggets were rarely served and the amount of time between was too much. The issue was brought up to the Student Union that chicken nuggets should be served in the café much more often. The president and other members of the Student Union must have had a meeting with the Head of the Food Department, or someone with deciding power over the meals, because a deal was formed that if a petition could get enough signatures, then they would have chicken nuggets served once a week. The problems faced by this coalition were getting enough support for the cause, as well as the faculty members listening to what we had to say. In the end, the petition received enough signatures and the temporary coalition was successful.
One primary group I belong to would be my family. We all live together and are very close. In contrast to my family, many of my classes could be considered secondary groups. In most of my classes, I do not know many of the people, and so we share “little social intimacy or mutual understanding.” One way the primary group could become a secondary group would be if all my siblings and myself moved far away from each other and did not keep in touch. A way that the secondary group could become a primary group could be that a group project is assigned and while working with a few of the classmates, a very strong friendship emerges.
