In the 32 years ago, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II of England, Lord Louis Mountbatten, was killed in a bomb explosion on a boat in Ireland. One grandson, Nicholas (14 years), and a ship employee, Paul Maxwell (15 years) were also killed in the incident.

BBC television said that separatist militia Northern Ireland, Irish Republican Army (IRA), confessed perpetrators of the attack by planting a bomb on Lord Mountbatten’s boat.

“This operation is one of the discriminatory way we could do to steal the attention of the British people for their occupation in our country,” wrote the IRA statement, as quoted from the pages of the BBC.

Lord Mountbatten who was then 79 years old, and his family often spent summer vacations at their castle in County Sligo, northwest Ireland. They were in the boat Shadow V had just departed from the fishing village of Mullaghmore, when the bomb exploded.

The attack raised questions related to security at Mountbatten. Lord Mountbatten never had a personal bodyguard. Local police are always watching Classiebawn castle, where Lord Mountbatten stayed for one month each year.

However, the Shadow V is anchored ship at the dock generally not been maintained. Fishing village of Mullaghmore is only 12 miles from the border with Northern Ireland and close to areas known to frequently used members of the IRA as a refugee.
