About my Buddy Greg’s Suburu…

Greg and I were both truck drivers  for Mayflower Transit, and spent a lot of time away from home and on the road. Sometimes, it seemed like there was no home; Just the truck…

In any case, when we were not out and about, across the 48(Lower United States), we would occasionally wander around the mountains doing a little GOLD prospecting. For us, there was no Burro, as in the days of old, but instead we had Greg’s SUBURU…Which, he lovingly called SUE… for obvious reasons. Sometimes, I didn’t think my Buddy had good sense, testing SUE to limits I wasn’t so sure about. Taking her up and down the side of hills, I couldn’t imagine was safe(without being 4 wheel drive), but SUE never failed. UNBELIEVABLE, but that was one tough car. It would have made a great Jeep(with a 4 wheel drive), but my Buddy always said…WHY would  he need a Jeep when he had SUE?

So now, back to work, and on the road again… We were assigned to load and deliver a company truck to Indianapolis, Indiana, to company Headquarters, but we were also told, we had to leave the truck and make our way back to Colorado. Well, Greg thought  for about half a second and said WE are not riding a bus back. He looked at me and said: “We ALWAYS have SUE”…

In the furniture business we sort of prided ourselves in being able to cram just about anything into the back of our truck. It’s a GUY thing, ya know! If it wouldn’t fit, we always figured out some way to get it in there. We both had hauled cars in the trailers before, so SUE was a capital idea. Pulling out our SPLIT walkboards(designed to use as cars ramps, or walkboards), we carefully eased the Suburu up the ramp into the back of the truck. Sure enough, it was a tight  fit and we had to go slow, but at last, SUE was in place for the long ride. A couple of tie down straps and bars to block the wheels, and we were on our  way to Indiana.

Next day, we were in Indy(Indianapolis) and eased SUE back out into the world for the trip home. We decided to take the shorter road back, which was old route 36. Lots of small towns, and fortunately, NO mountainsides to slide down, or Greg would have had to try it. But, I had no doubts that SUE would have made it. I haven’t seen Greg for years, but I always have to wonder…IF he still has that Suburu?
