A short romantic story.

Mary was an eighteen year old, about to start university. Her parents took her to visit her new university, they had been before on an open day but this time she’d earned a place and had been accepted.

The  weather was horrible, the rain beat down on the car roof. Mary had plans to check out the shops to get a feel for the place before she had to venture out on her own and fend for herself. It was Sunday, there was not much open but at least she knew what was available, fortunately a few shops were familiar as they also had branches in her home town 70 miles away.

Everyone was feeling a little gloomy so they decided to have a Mc Donald’s, Mum and Dad were fussing over what they were to order andMary, getting a little bored of their company stood absentmindedly staring around the building. She noticed a small group of people dashing in through the door to get in out of the rain. It looked like a family, two teenage boys, and their parents. They joined the queue and Mary noticed one of the boys, thinking he looked quiet nice. Meanwhile her Mum and Dad collected their tray of goodies and they all went to sit down.

Mary noticed she was being watched shyly by the boy in the family group. He led the way to their table, choosing the one closest to Mary and her parents. He sat down to eat his meal engaging in conversation with his parents but occasionally glancing around the room, just happening to rest his eyes on Mary every so often!

She was quite flattered and tried to make eye contact without looking too obvious.

Marys mum started talking to the boys mum, Mary always finds this embarrassing, her mum will strike up a conversation with anyone! She explained that they were visiting the area because Mary was starting at the university in a couple of weeks. The parents engaged in chitter chatter and it turned out that they had come to show their son the area too, because he was also starting Uni. at the same time. Mary’s heart skipped a beat, fortunately it was the same boy that had been showing interest in her.

The meal came to an end and Mary and her parents left saying goodbye, the boy gave Mary an enormous smile that made Mary weak at the knees. He said “maybe see you soon?” She gave him a shy coy smile.

This took me back to the first day we took out son to university. he looked so sad and lost as we left. I suppose this is the same for most students when they start out. A very good story.
