Scene one of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Once upon a time, there were two lovers called Hermia and Lysander. They lived in Athens, Greece.  However Hermia was to be married to Demetrius, a nobleman. In addition to that, Hermia and Lysander’s affair was discovered by Hermia’s father, Egeus.

When Egeus found out what was happening, he was very angry and took Hermia, Lysander and Demetrius with him and meet with the Duke of Athens, Theseus. Egeus told Theseus about his daughter’s wedding problems which is Demetrius has his permission to marry Hermia but Lysander don’t. Demetrius has also caused another woman called Helena to fall in love with him and Hermia don’t love Demetrius.

According to the law of Athens, if an unmarried woman disobeys her father she could be put to death. So Theseus gave Hermia four days to decide her fate as in four days time Theseus will be marrying Hippolyta. However, Lysander made a plan to escape Athens and go to his aunt where they can get married. Unfortunately they told Hermia about their plan to escape Athens and she plan to tell Demetrius about their escape.
