Five to eight and they had only moved a few meters from their last position. Obviously they were not going to reach Kuala Lumpur International Airport by eight p.m. James’ father thumped the wheel impatiently, muttering curses under his breath. His mother said that there was nothing that they could do except wait and hope that the traffic cleared soon.

Overheat Engine
Fortunately the car has an air-conditioner so the windows did not mist up, but the engine was definitely being strained. James could see the temperature gauge of the car rising slowly and surely toward the red line. He prayed that the engine would not overheat.

Terrible Accident
They crawled meter by meter forward. Gradually they saw the reason for the traffic jam. Through the white mist of rain James could see a motorcycle on its side on the road. A badly damaged car was parked beside it. What a terrible accident it must have been. But they had no time to dally about. They had to make the airport as soon as possible.

Once clear of the scene of the accident, the car picked up speed, but they could not go very fast for the rain had not let up. Through what seemed to be an eternity they finally came within sight of the well-lit airport. James’ father steered into the “departure” lane but was again caught in another traffic jam. About a hundred meters from the check-in counter, the car came to halt. There was no way to get to counter in a hurry. James saw that it was already 8.40 p.m. Goodness, they were really late.

In desperation John jumped out of the car and asked James to help him carry the luggage to the counter by foot. Everyone alighted to help except James’ father. He had to follow the traffic and park the car somewhere.

Just Made It
James helped his brother John gets the luggage to the counter. When they reached there, only one clerk was present. All the other passengers had checked in and the clerk was about to close the counter. The airplane was due to take off in fifteen minutes time. The other passengers were already boarding. John just made it.

Immediately after checking in, John was asked to board the airplane. He kissed everybody goodbye except his father. The poor man was probably still stuck in the traffic jam. Anyway delay was impossible and John had to board the plane without saying goodbye to his father. His mother promised to do it for him.

With a wave of his hand, John disappeared into the departure lounge. Their race against time was over.
