In my high school English class, we had an assignment to make our own extension of the book, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. I decided that I waned to share my extension with all of you. If you haven’t already read the book, I would suggest it. Comments and thoughts are appreciated.
*NOTE – The book, A Raisin in the Sun and all of its content are the work of Lorraine Hansberry, not me. This is simply my version of an extension.
Scene 2
Clybourne Park, the Youngers have just finished unpacking their stuff. Everyone is practically exhausted from the unpacking and are sitting around, relaxing.
Walter: (seeming a little nervous) Did you see all them white people givin’ us them looks? They must of never had no colored folks around here before…
Beneatha: (mocking the idea Mr. Lindner had presented to them) If they ever did, I bet the “Welcoming Committee” came and “welcomed” them into the neighborhood.
Mama: Yeah, well, they just gunna have to deal with it.
Ruth: (trying to change the subject) Mama, where you going to put your plant?
Beneatha: You still brought that thing?
Mama: Yes I did. I think I’ll put it on the windowsill in the kitchen. Looks like there is enough light there…
Ruth: (changing the subject again) I think I found a new job in they city. Same kind of thing I was doin’ before.
Mama: (worried about Ruth over-working herself) Now Ruth, you shouldn’t be workin’ and raisin’ that baby at the same time.
Ruth: (somewhat ignoring what Mama had said) And Walter found a job as a taxi driver-Travis, did you make your bed?
Travis: No, ma’am.
Ruth: Then go on and do it, and you do it right this time. Your Grandma not gunna do it for you no more.
(Travis exits, presumably to make his bed..)
Walter: I found a possible job too, in the city. Gotta call ‘em yet.
Mama: What as?
Walter: (somewhat disappointed in his own choice) Taxi driver…
(Somebody knocks on the door. Beneatha gets up and opens it to find A white man, woman, and young boy stand, smiling, in front of Beneatha.)
Woman: Hello, neighbors! We just wanted to welcome you to the neighborhood!
Walter: (under his breath) No thanks. We were already welcomed by the committee.
Ruth: Watler…
Woman: (continuing) I’m Mrs. Jenger and this (motioning to the man beside her) is my husband, Mr. Jenger. This (motioning to the young boy) is our son, Timothy.
