A story.
A SAD EXPERIENCE I HAD
I met Steve at a party on November 5, 1986. He was a young man of twenty five. At that age, he was already a wealthy man with his own house, fleet of cars and a fat bank account. Immediately, he introduced himself to me, I was captivated by his posture and this made me fall in love with him. Coincidentally, before the end of the party, he proposed that I should be his lover. I did not give him a positive reply, instead, I told him we needed time before we could go into that. He agreed with me and promised to check on me the following day.
He came as he promised to come to my house and I used the opportunity to ask him a lot of questions such as his occupation, family and other essential things. He told me about his business and ask me to join him in this business. I agreed with his business proposal to sell goods brought by Steve from neighbouring countries like Ghana, Togo and Benin. I agreed with this proposal because at that time, I was jobless. Not only that, I thought since Steve was my lover there was nothing bad in being his business partner. With this agreement reached. I started selling product brought by Steve from his trips. Virtually every week, Steve would bring good for me to sell. I was happy because of this and even thank my star for making me come across him. Apart from business, both of us enjoyed our love live. People took notice of me as Steve’s lover and business partner. In the process, I made a lot of friends. All these while, I never new that Steve was a thief and also he was the leader of an armed robbery gang. It never occurred to me and I never suspected him.
As usual, I was expecting him to come to my house. Funny enough he did not turn up for a whole week. According to a popular adage which says “everyday is for the thief, One day is for the owner”. This exactly happened, Steve and his gang were arrested and detained. After the investigation was concluded the police came to arrest me in my house. Being in the dark of the happenings, I asked them the reason of my arrest. None of them answered, they only told me that I should follow them to the police station and this I did without complaint.
On getting to the station, I was told of my offence that I was accomplice to Steve and his gang’s operation. The officer in charged asked me so many questions which I answered. Later, he brought Steve to me. I almost fainted when I saw him and expressed shock at what happened. Without wasting time, I was detained in the female cell. I could never sleep nor eat. I was there miserably. Every effort made my parents and friends to see to my release proved abortive. I deserve this treatment because when the relationship started my parents did not support it not for anything but because for them, Steve ought not to be my lover. According to them, they did not know the source of his wealth. However, being a woman twenty two, they allowed me to take the decision on my own, only that I just take the responsibility of the repercussion.
Indeed, this incident proved them right. I thought of my parents’ warning and my friend’s cautious words in my cell and instantly I wish I had never met the man called Steve.
